University Social Responsibility and organizational commitment: the mediating effect of job satisfaction in public sector teachers

Abstract

University social responsibility (USR) generates positive attitudinal and behavioral effects. This study proposes to analyze these effects among university teachers who work under social responsibility policies, as manifested in their affective and normative commitment to the institution in which they work in the public sector. Consistent with this, job satisfaction is proposed as a mediating variable in the relationship between the two constructs, as it is expected to be associated with greater commitment to the institution. Thus, a structural equation model based on covariances was estimated using data from 204 university professors. The results show that socially responsible efforts have positive and significant effects on faculty job satisfaction, which, in turn, fosters affective and normative commitment. USR opens up the possibility of highlighting and improving conditions in the higher education context, establishing itself as a management strategy that should be implemented and evaluated alongside academic results, well-being, and commitment among those who perceive it.
