University management has undergone a series of transformations during the last decades. The internationalization of this kind of institutions has undergone important changes in this scenario and Chile is no exception in this regard. This article analyzes the evolution of university internationalization in this country based on a multiple case study. The results show a progressive institutionalization associated with the centralization of decision-making, the use of indicators and the professionalization of management that coexist at a cultural level with the protection of the foundational and missional aspects of universities, far removed from the new public management model. The article ends with a concise overview and potential lines of research.
