This article analyses the different theories that have been used as reference to conceptually justify the commitment with social responsibility of the universities. On this basis the main objective has been to justify which theory adjusts best to the precepts of the term social responsibility of universities (RSU) given the need to create a useful theoretical framework for the conceptual explanation of the RSUguidelines. The main contribution of the article allows us to infer that the RSUconcept should be configured in accordance with the hypotheses of the stakeholder theory, given the need to meet the expectations of the different stakeholders in each of its functions from an economic, social and environmental viewpoint.
